Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
A tragic accident occurred on National Highway 6 (NH-6) in Howrah district’s Uluberia on Friday morning, where a traffic police home guard was fatally struck by a truck while on duty. The deceased, identified as Somnath Roy, was 40 years old and lived in Sankrail, Howrah. He was immediately rushed to Saratchandra Medical College in Uluberia, but doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
According to local police reports, Somnath Roy was carrying out his duties at the Srirampur intersection on NH-6 when the incident occurred. Witnesses reported that a moving truck hit Roy and sped off before bystanders could react. The truck was last seen heading towards Kolaghat.
Superintendent of Police (Howrah Rural) Swati Bangalia confirmed the incident, stating, “A traffic home guard was hit by a truck while on duty. He tragically lost his life. We are investigating the incident and efforts are being made to identify the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run.”
Efforts are underway to locate the driver and the vehicle responsible for the accident. Police are relying on CCTV footage and witness accounts to gather further leads.
